Viewing and Querying Annotations

3.3 Viewing Annotations

FishVue Interpret Pro offers two main ways to view annotation details: the Annotation Tree window and the Annotation List window. You can use the Annotation Tree window to view the dozens of annotations that define each trip, or use the Annotation List window for greater detail when reviewing thousands of annotations within a category (for example, catch observations). Both windows are accessible from the Annotations menu.

3.3.1 Viewing the Annotation Tree Window

The Annotation Tree window lists all annotations in the data set, grouped under their respective categories. You can use this area to view and edit annotations. In some custom configurations, high-frequency annotations (such as those used to document catch) are not accessible through the Annotation Tree window.

To view the Annotation Tree window:

  • From the Annotations menu, choose Open Annotation Tree Window. The Annotation Tree window is displayed.
  • To view annotations within one of the groups, click the List Annotations button beside the group.

3.3.2 Viewing the Annotation List Window

The Annotation List window is designed for working with annotations created during video review. It displays all available video catch data records. While you may typically use the Annotation Tree window to manage the dozens of fishing event annotations that define each trip, the Annotation List window provides more detail on video-specific annotations and can display thousands of annotations.

Using the Annotation List window you can review, edit, or delete existing annotations, or create new ones.

To modify annotations using the Annotation List window:

  1. From the Annotations menu, choose Open Annotation List Window (or on the Annotation Tree window, click the List Annotations button next to one of the groups). The Annotation List window is displayed.
  2. On the left pane, click an activity to display any available video records for that activity.
  3. In the right pane, double-click an annotation to highlight that event in the Annotation List and within the time series. You can then:
    • Click the delete button next to an annotation to remove it.
    • Click the edit button next to an annotation to display a window where you can edit annotation details.
  4. To create a new annotation at the current video time (indicated by the red line), click the New Annotation button to display the list of available annotation options.
  5. To synchronize an annotation with the current video time, click the sync button next to the annotation.
  6. Once you have finished reviewing annotations, click the close button to close the Annotation List window.

3.3.3 Querying Annotations

You can use the annotation query feature to quickly investigate a subset of annotations by sorting, grouping, and filtering them. You can then review video at that time and edit an annotation directly from the Annotation Query window. The annotation query feature can help make quality-control processes easier while reducing the time and cost required to locate and review relevant data.

The feature enables you to query annotations by type across the entire data set, or query a subset (for example, only the lower-level annotations occurring within a higher-level interval annotation). You can access the Annotation Query window from either the Annotation Tree window or the Annotation List window.

Accessing the Annotation Query Window

To access the Annotation Query window from the Annotation List window:

  • To display all annotations, click the Query All Annotations button.
  • To display a subset of annotations, click a subset in the left pane and then click the Query Selected Annotation Sub-Tree button.

The Annotation Query window is displayed. Each additional selection opens as a new Annotation Query window. To change the annotation type, choose the type from the dropdown list in the Filter section.

To access the Annotation Query window from the Annotation Tree window:

  • Click the Query Annotations button beside any subset (for example, Trip, Haul, or Video Haul) to query annotations within that subset.
  • Click the Query All Annotations button to select annotations within the entire data set.

NOTE: Some annotations may be visible in the Annotation List window but not the Annotation Tree window.

To select an annotation in the Annotation Query window, click once on it. The start time of the annotation will be selected in the time series and map (indicated by the red line), and the annotation will be selected in the Annotation Tree and Annotation List. With video loaded, the start time will also be selected in the Video Window, allowing you to review the video at the time the selected annotation was made.

Sorting Annotations

To sort annotations:

  • Click on a column header to sort by that column.
  • Reorder columns by dragging column headers left or right.

Grouping Annotations

To group annotations:

  • Click and drag a column header upward into the toolbar above the table to create a new search category. You can drag additional columns to add more grouping levels.
  • Click the expand button next to a list item to expand that group. You can then click one of the rows to select the annotation’s start time in the time series and map, and to highlight the annotation in the Annotation List window.
  • To stop grouping by a column, click the button located next to the search category header in the toolbar.

Filtering Annotations

FishVue Interpret Pro includes a filter feature for further restricting search results within the Annotation Query window.

To use the filter feature:

  1. In the Annotation Query window, click the filter button on a column header. The Filter box is displayed.
  2. Create a filter by specifying the group(s) to filter and the relationship between them.
  3. Click Filter to apply the filter, or Clear Filter to start over.

Editing Annotations from the Annotation Query Window

To edit an annotation from the Annotation Query window:

  1. In the Annotation Query window, double-click on the annotation you have sorted, grouped, or filtered for. The edit window will appear.
  2. Correct any applicable fields and click OK, or click the cancel button to discard changes.
