3.5 Editing Annotations

When you create an annotation, FishVue Interpret Pro automatically records the date, time, and location. Depending on the annotation type, there may also be an opportunity to specify additional information (for example, gear type or accuracy).

3.5.1 Editing Annotation Details

NOTE: You can use the Accuracy field to specify a point to start or end the data set in the event of a time gap (a period during which data records are unavailable). Options include “exact,” “first point after time gap,” “last point before time gap,” and “estimate.” The appropriate setting will be determined by the specific management scheme for your project.

If you want to edit the details of an interval annotation, there are three ways to proceed. Note that depending on the type of annotation, it may only be visible in certain places.

To edit the details of an interval annotation:

• From the time series or map, click on the annotation’s icon and select the edit option.
• From the Annotation Tree window (accessed through the Annotations menu), click the edit button next to the annotation you want to edit.
• From the Annotation List window (accessed through the Annotations menu), click the edit icon on the right-hand side of the annotations list.

Depending on the type of interval annotation, one of several boxes will be displayed providing a range of details that you can edit.

3.6 Managing Annotation Files

Once you have created or edited any annotations, you can save them as a single .Interpret file.

3.6.1 Saving and Loading Annotations

To save new or edited annotations:

1. From the Annotations menu, choose Save Annotations File. The Save As dialog box is displayed.
2. Specify a location to save your annotations. The file will be saved as an .Interpret file.
3. Click Save.

NOTE: If FishVue Interpret detects a validation error when saving, an error message will be displayed. Click OK to save anyway, or Cancel to return and correct the annotation error.

To load saved annotations in FishVue Interpret Pro:

1. From the Annotations menu, choose Load Annotations File. The Open dialog box is displayed.
2. Navigate to the location of the .Interpret file and click Open.
3. A message may appear warning you that all existing annotations will be overwritten. Click OK to proceed.

3.6.2 Restoring Annotations (from Auto-backup)

FishVue Interpret Pro automatically saves annotations as a backup file. Should you need to, you can restore your annotations from this backup. Typically you would choose the most recent time listed to access the most recently auto-saved annotations.

To restore annotations from backup:

1. From the Annotations menu, choose Restore Annotation from Auto-backup. A list of available backups is displayed beside the Annotations menu.
2. Click on the most recent backup. A message appears warning you that all existing annotations will be overwritten.
3. Click OK.

NOTE: Auto-backup annotations available to be restored are not specific to the sensor data file currently in use. Before restoring from an auto-backup file, ensure that the saved annotations apply to the current data set.

3.6.3 Undoing or Redoing Annotations

If you make a mistake when working with annotations, you can undo your last action. FishVue Interpret Pro enables you to undo the last series of actions, including creating, moving, or deleting annotations. If you later decide you did not want to undo an action, you can use the Redo command.

To undo or redo an action:

• On the Annotations menu, choose Undo. To undo a series of actions, choose this command repeatedly.
• To redo the action, choose Redo.

You can also set up Undo and Redo as keyboard shortcuts using the Key Bindings box. From the Settings menu, choose Keyboard Controls.

3.6.4 Exporting Annotations (as an XML File)

Once you have created or edited any annotations, you can export them as an .xml file. The xml file can then be imported into a database (such as Microsoft Access or similar) for further analysis.

To export annotations as an .xml file:

1. From the Annotations menu, choose Export Annotations. The Save As dialog box is displayed.
2. Specify a location to save your annotations. The file will be saved as an .xml file.
3. Click Save.

NOTE: You cannot load the .xml file back into FishVue Interpret Pro. It is strongly advised to also save a copy of your annotations as an .Interpret file. For more information on the .xml output format, contact your Archipelago EM project manager.

3.6.5 Exporting Multiple Annotation Files into a Single XML File

To transform multiple annotation files (.Interpret files) into one xml file, Archipelago has created the Annotation Exporter utility, an external application that operates independently of the FishVue Interpret Pro software. For more information on the Annotation Exporter, contact your Archipelago EM project manager.

3.6.6 Exporting Annotations via a Plugin

Users can export data directly to a third-party database using a custom plugin generated by Archipelago. The Plugin Manager allows you to manage your installed plugins.

Upon start-up, the Plugin Manager can be accessed via the Manage Plugins button. The Plugin Manager provides the following options:

• Add: Navigate to a zipped plugin file to load it into the software.
• Refresh: Reloads the list of displayed plugins in the active/inactive folders. Use this if you are installing a plugin manually.
• Enable/Disable: Applies to all selected plugins. Disables if active; activates if disabled. If the plugin name appears grey, the plugin is disabled.
• Delete: Deletes all selected plugins.
• Cancel: Closes the Plugin Manager.

To export via a plugin:

1. Click on the Plugins menu item in the top left of the main FishVue Interpret window, between Settings and Help. A dropdown will appear listing all currently installed plugins and an option to Add New. If no plugins have been installed, a “None Available” label will appear.
2. Click on a loaded plugin to open it and follow the instructions provided by Archipelago for its use. Contact Archipelago if you have any questions about this feature.
