2.5 Using Notes
Notes in FishVue Interpret can display either skipper (or technician) created comments, or data analyst created comments. Notes differ from annotations in that notes are saved within the data set and do not need to be loaded independently.
Notes can be used to pass along information or flag a particular process, event, or incident for further investigation. Notes are attached to a specific date, time, and location on the cruise track.
2.5.1 Skipper Notes
While at sea, the skipper of the vessel may create notes while the EM system is turned on. Skipper-created notes are stored within the CE.txt file. When a .zip file containing comments is loaded into FishVue Interpret, the information appears as notes in the time series.
To display a skipper-created note:
- In the time series, ensure the Events section is displayed (click the button next to the Events label to show all timelines). Any available notes are marked with a note icon. The skipper note icon is always displayed in green.
- Rest the mouse pointer over the icon to display the note’s label describing the subject.
- Click the note icon to display the vessel comment.
- Click anywhere outside of the note to close the window.
2.5.2 User Notes
User-created notes can flag a specific date, time, and location for information or for further investigation; for example, a data analyst may flag an unusual occurrence for further review by a supervisor. When notes are saved, a new .xml file is created within the .zip file, and from that point on the notes will always load alongside the data set.
To create a note:
- Right-click in the appropriate location and time on the line graph, box graph, or cruise track (on the map).
- From the popup menu, choose Add Note. The Note box is displayed.
- In the Note box, type in the subject and text for your note, and click OK to close the note. The user note icon is always displayed in blue.
After you have created notes, you must save them before you quit FishVue Interpret, or they will be discarded.
To save all notes:
- From the File menu, choose Save Notes. The notes will be saved with the original sensor data.
Once created, user notes can be viewed in the Events section of the time series the same way skipper notes are accessed. Unlike skipper notes, user notes can be edited and deleted.
To export notes:
- In the Events section of the time series, select the table button beside Events.
- In the notes window, click the Export to Excel button.
- Save the Excel file to the desired location.
2.6 Copying Imagery from a Video
While reviewing EM data, you may want to copy a section of video (for example, concerning a particular event or incident such as a protected species interaction) for further review. With FishVue Interpret, you can clip a subset of video and sensor data, or a single image, and save it to your desktop or another location.
2.6.1 Clipping Video Around a Point
With FishVue Interpret, you can clip a subset of video and sensor data and save it to your desktop or another location. Clipped datasets can be small enough to send in an email and can be viewed by another reviewer using FishVue Interpret.
NOTE: Before you can clip a data set, you must first have loaded the video data in FishVue Interpret. For more on this, see “Loading Video Data” earlier in this chapter.
To clip a data set around a point:
- On the timeline or cruise track, right-click on the point you would like to copy and select Clip Dataset Around Point.
- The Clip Dataset box displays the time range included in the clip. Adjust the duration of the clip around the selected point. The start and end date and times will automatically change when the duration is adjusted.
- Use Clip on Cameras to filter and select which cameras to include in the clipping task. The field supports multiple selections.
- Click the Browse… button to specify the location where you would like to save the clipped dataset.
- Select Output Clipped Sensor Data to include the sensor data for the selected time along with the video, then click Start.
The Clipping Dataset box displays the name of the .zip file and each video file being clipped. The data clip will be saved to the specified location within a folder named <Vessel_Name>_<DatasetID>_<Configuration>_YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS. Within this folder, the sensor data is placed under the subfolder: Sensor Data.
A red cross icon appears when a clipping error occurs for a file. Move the cursor over the icon to see the detailed error message.
2.6.2 Clipping Video Interval
With FishVue Interpret, you can clip a subset of video and sensor data over a defined interval and save it to your desktop or another location.
NOTE: Before you can clip a data set, you must first have loaded the video data in FishVue Interpret. For more on this, see “Loading Video Data” earlier in this chapter.
To clip a data set by interval:
- On the timeline or cruise track, right-click on the point you would like to copy and select Clip Dataset Interval.
- The Clip Dataset box displays the time range included in the clip. Adjust the start and end times of the interval. Duration is automatically updated when the dates and times are adjusted.
- Use Clip on Cameras to filter and select which cameras to include in the clipping task. The field supports multiple selections.
- Click the Browse… button to specify the location where you would like to save the clipped dataset.
- Select Output Clipped Sensor Data to include the sensor data for the selected time along with the video, then click Start.
The Clipping Dataset box displays the name of the .zip file and each video file being clipped. The data clip will be saved within a folder named <Vessel_Name>_<DatasetID>_<Configuration>_YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS. Sensor data is placed under the subfolder: Sensor Data.
A red cross icon appears when a clipping error occurs for a file. Move the cursor over the icon to see the detailed error message.
2.6.3 Clipping Around Annotations
FishVue Interpret provides a bulk clipping process that extracts video segments around selected annotations. This background task generates individual clips for each annotated interval that matches the chosen annotation type. Annotations whose time intervals overlap are merged and treated as a single grouped interval.
The Clip Around Annotations window allows you to specify the output directory, choose which cameras to include, and decide whether sensor data should be clipped along with the video. The annotations included in the bulk clipping process are selected by annotation type. Only Point-in-Time and Interval annotation types are available in the dropdown.
- Point-in-Time annotations: You can specify the duration of the clip, with the annotation timestamp serving as the center of the resulting interval.
- Interval annotations: The annotation’s start and end times are used directly to define the clip duration.
If desired, annotation information can be exported as metadata alongside the video clips, providing context about the annotations that triggered each clipped interval.
2.6.4 Copying an Image from a Video
When viewing a video, you can save a single frame as an image.
To save an image from a video:
- Pause the video, then right-click on the video window.
- Select Save Image As.
- Type a name for your image and click OK. The image will be saved to the specified location.
